Sequencing is an important skill to work on for many reasons. Effective sequencing requires the ability to identify a series of ideas or events, and the ability to order the ideas/events in a way that logically makes sense. Sequencing is such a prevalent part of day-to-day life that the ability to sequence can be considered a life skill.
When do you use sequencing?
- When completing hygiene tasks (e.g., brushing your teeth, having a shower washing your face)
- Getting dressed
- Making meals
- Getting ready for school
- Counting
- Building Lego sets
- Retelling a story
Ways to use sequencing cards:
- Place the cards in sequential order. Tell a story about what is happening in the pictures to your child
- Place the cards in sequential order. Have your child tell you a story about what is happening in the pictures
- Place only the first card down. Have your child put the remaining cards in order and tell you what is happening in the pictures
- Provide your child with all of the sequencing cards. Have your child place them in order and tell you what is happening in the pictures.
